Introduction
A burst pipe or sudden plumbing leak can flood your home in minutes, causing thousands of dollars in structural water damage. Knowing exactly where your main water shut off valve is and how to operate it is the single most important piece of emergency maintenance every homeowner should master.
1. Locate Your Main Water Valve
Depending on your home's architecture and local climate, the shut off valve is typically found in one of three primary locations:
Inside the Home (Basement or Utility Closet): Look along the interior perimeter wall closest to the street, usually where the main pipe enters through the foundation.
Near the Water Heater: In many warmer climates, the valve is mounted alongside the water heater or inside an exterior utility cabinet.
At the Street Meter Box: If you cannot find an interior valve, locate the concrete or plastic meter box near your property line by the sidewalk.
2. Identify the Valve Type
Ball Valve: Features a straight lever handle. Turning the handle 90 degrees (perpendicular to the pipe) completely stops the water flow.
Gate Valve: Features a round wheel handle. Turn it clockwise ("Righty Tighty") continuously until it stops completely to cut off the supply.
3. Test the Shut-Off Safely
Do not wait for an emergency to test your main valve. Give it a gentle turn twice a year to ensure it hasn't seized up due to mineral deposits. If the valve feels stuck or rusted, never force it with heavy tools, as this can snap the pipe.
When to Call a Professional
If your main valve is leaking, stuck solid, or buried underground in a flooded meter box, don't risk snapping the line.
